Every night, as the last skiers return to their chalets, 36 drivers at Alpe d’Huez take the controls of their snow groomers to prepare the 250 kilometers of slopes . But since the winter of 2023-24, this century-old routine has taken a historic turn: five hydrogen-powered snow groomers now glide silently over the snow , with zero CO2 emissions and an 8-hour range. Developed by the Savoyard company GCK, these revolutionary machines mark Alpe d’Huez’s entry into the era of clean grooming.

80,000 Liters of Diesel Saved Each Year

The challenge is significant because snow grooming generates approximately 95% of greenhouse gas emissions on the Alpe d’Huez ski area. Faced with this challenge, SATA initially focused on people: for the past five years, all drivers have been trained in eco-driving, saving between 30,000 and 40,000 liters of diesel per year at the Alpe d’Huez ski resort . Across the SATA group (Alpe d’Huez, Les Deux Alpes, La Grave), this represents 80,000 liters saved out of a total consumption of 1.4 million liters. “Starting by properly adjusting your snow groomer helps avoid overconsumption,” explains Yann Carrel , Director of Operations.

Quieter Nights for Local Wildlife

The benefits go far beyond the numbers. Using GPS optimizes grooming by precisely measuring snow depths and prevents the need to pass over the same spot twice in Alpe d’Huez: where skiing meets ecology – I Love Ski ®, thereby reducing the amount of nighttime work. These electric snow groomers, powered by 320-kilowatt motors, deliver performance on par with gas-powered machines while respecting the sleep of wildlife. For snow groomers and drivers, this also means a healthier work environment, free from exhaust fumes in the pure mountain air.

2037: On the Path to Carbon Neutrality

This revolution in snow grooming is part of the resort’s ambitious goal: to achieve carbon neutrality by 2037. At Alpe d’Huez, it’s all white and all green—Actumontagne. Although the five hydrogen-powered snow groomers account for only a quarter of the total fleet of 20 machines, they are paving the way for a complete transformation.
