What’s this phrase you now see everywhere across the Alpe d’Huez ski area and its surroundings? Don’t eat the yellow snow is a small new brand of clothing and accessories, born right here at home in the heart of the Grandes Rousses massif!
It was in one of the resort’s bistros, after an aprĂšs-ski that was probably a little too boozy, that this slogan resurfaced… Since snow doesn’t turn yellow without human or animal intervention, its consumption is therefore very strongly discouraged.
For the record, “Don’t Eat the Yellow Snow” is a cult song by Frank Zappa, released in 1974 on the album Apostrophe (‘). The song tells the story of an Eskimo named Nanook who is given a warning by his mother: don’t eat the yellow snow (an obvious reference to urine).
Beyond the song, “don’t eat the yellow snow” has turned into a humorous expression in English, a sort of sarcastic, blindingly obvious survival tip â a warning so basic that it becomes comical, and so it has also become a kind of local slogan unique to our resort. You know you’re in Alpe d’Huez when you see the yellow stickers on skis, bags, ski helmets…
With that in mind, and because we didn’t want to keep such wise advice to ourselves, stickers very quickly followed, doled out in dribs and drabs to the resort’s local professionals (ski instructors, ski patrollers, lift operators…), then handed out to everyone. But you wanted more…
So today, “Don’t eat the yellow snow” is an online shop bringing together a range of products bearing our slogan: T-shirts, sweatshirts, beanies, caps, puffer jackets, etc. (perfect for looking classy on a night out while reminding everyone of this sound advice, or as a gift for a ski-loving uncle).
